Conducting Industry Research: American FactFinder

What is American FactFinder

American FactFinder is where you can go to find data from the United States Census. The data comes from United States Census and the American Community Survey. You can find population and demographic data, as well as information about businesses, employment, income, industry, and people’s education.

American FactFinder

1. Finding Your Neighborhood

When you go to American FactFinder, there are a couple different options. To find data on your community, click in the space provided under Community Facts and enter in the ZIP code you are interested in.

2. Where is all the information?

The next page will show you the total population for that ZIP code in 2010, as well as provide you with some links to more detailed information about the population.

The links on the left side will take you to other adreas of interest, ie. age, education, income. These sections all in turn have detailed tables of data on different measurements taken by the Census and American Community Survey.

3. What should I be looking for?

The data in American FactFinder is so rich, it can be a little overwhelming. Look over some of the tables in the different sections, and think about how you can use this information to make decisions about your business. Things you may want to consider are demographic factors (like age, gender, and race) and also social and economic factors (like income, employment, and household type). All of these might influence your business.

If you want to print or download a specific table, you can do so by pressing the print button.
